Air Conditioning vs Air Source Heat Pump — What's the Difference?
Split-system air conditioning provides heating and cooling to the rooms it serves. An air-to-water air source heat pump is designed to supply heat through a home's radiators or underfloor heating and may also heat its hot water. Both move heat, but they serve different roles and involve different installation work.
What they have in common
Both split system air conditioning units and air source heat pumps are heat pumps — they move heat from outside air into (or out of) your building, rather than burning fuel to generate heat. Both run on electricity and are significantly more efficient than electric radiators.
Split system air conditioning
A split system AC unit (the type PGAD installs) provides room-by-room climate control. It can cool in summer and heat in winter. The indoor unit blows conditioned air directly into the room; you control each room independently. Split systems are typically installed in individual rooms where comfort is most needed — bedrooms, living rooms, home offices. They don't replace your central heating system — they supplement it, or provide primary comfort in specific rooms.
Air-to-water air source heat pump (ASHP)
An air-to-water ASHP is designed to provide a home's main space heating through radiators or underfloor heating; some models can also heat domestic hot water. Suitability depends on the property, insulation, heat emitters, hot-water needs and electrical supply. It is a larger project than adding a split unit to one room, so compare costs after a property assessment. Government support may be available; check current eligibility and grant amounts before budgeting.
Which is right for your home?
If you want to cool particular rooms and add heating in those rooms, split-system air conditioning may suit your needs; it does not connect to radiators or provide hot water. If you want to replace a boiler as the home's main heating system, an air-to-water heat pump is designed for that role and needs a whole-property assessment.
