Best Air Conditioning for a Bedroom — What to Look For

Choosing air conditioning for a bedroom is different from other rooms. Sleep comfort depends on quiet operation, the right temperature, and air quality — not just raw cooling power. Here's what to consider.

The right capacity for a bedroom

For a standard UK bedroom (10–15 m²), a 2.5 kW unit is usually sufficient. Larger master bedrooms or rooms with south-facing windows may need 3.5 kW. Oversizing a unit causes it to cycle on and off frequently, which is less efficient and more disruptive during sleep. PGAD calculates the correct capacity for your room during the free survey — correct sizing is one of the most important factors in long-term comfort and efficiency.

Noise level — the most important factor

The indoor unit's noise level is measured in decibels (dB). For bedrooms, aim for a unit rated below 25 dB on its lowest setting — quieter than a whisper. Mitsubishi Electric units are widely regarded as the quietest on the market, with some models reaching as low as 19 dB. Haier and Sinclair units also perform well for bedroom use. The outdoor unit should be positioned away from bedroom windows where possible to minimise external noise.

Features to look for in a bedroom unit

Sleep mode gradually adjusts temperature during the night to avoid overcooling or overheating. Timer functions let you pre-cool the room before bedtime and switch off automatically. Auto-restart after a power cut ensures the room stays comfortable. Wi-Fi control via smartphone lets you adjust settings without disturbing sleep. R32 units with inverter compressors run at variable speed, maintaining a steady temperature rather than cycling on and off — significantly quieter in practice.
