Common boiler faults

Methodical diagnosis for heating and hot-water problems.

A boiler can stop working for many reasons, from low system pressure or a control problem to a failed internal component. Error codes are useful clues, but they do not always identify the root cause on their own.

We assess the symptoms, controls, boiler and visible system components before explaining the likely cause. Where a repair is practical, you receive a clear scope and cost before further work is agreed.

  • No heating or no hot water
  • Boiler losing pressure or needing frequent top-ups
  • Fault codes, failed ignition or repeated lockouts
  • Unusual noises, leaks or unreliable operation
  • Radiators not warming correctly despite the boiler running

Repair or replace?

Advice based on safety, condition and long-term value.

Not every breakdown means a boiler needs replacing. We consider the age and condition of the appliance, parts availability, repair cost and the likelihood of further faults before discussing the options.

If repair is sensible, we explain the work needed. If the boiler is unsafe, uneconomical to repair or approaching the end of its useful life, we can provide a separate quotation for a properly sized replacement.

Safety first

What to do while your boiler is faulty.

Do not remove the boiler casing or attempt work on gas components. If you smell gas, turn off the supply at the meter if it is safe to do so, open doors and windows, avoid electrical switches and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
