Can Air Conditioning Heat a House?
Yes — modern split system air conditioning units are heat pumps, which means they work equally well for heating as they do for cooling. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of air conditioning, and one of the biggest reasons to consider installing it year-round rather than just for summer.
How air conditioning heats a room
A split system air conditioner contains a reversing valve that allows it to operate in both directions. In cooling mode, it extracts heat from inside and expels it outside. In heating mode, it reverses the cycle — extracting heat energy from the outside air and pumping it into the room. This works even when the outside temperature is well below zero: modern R32 units can extract useful heat down to -15°C or colder.
How efficient is air conditioning for heating?
Because heat pumps move heat rather than generate it, they deliver far more energy than they consume. For every 1 kW of electricity used, a modern unit delivers 3–5 kW of heat — a ratio called the Coefficient of Performance (COP). By comparison, an electric radiator or fan heater delivers exactly 1 kW of heat per 1 kW of electricity. This makes air conditioning 3–5 times more efficient for heating than direct electric heating, significantly reducing running costs.
Can it heat a whole house?
A single indoor unit heats the room it's installed in. For whole-home heating, a multi-split system with indoor units in each main room can provide complete coverage. This is different from an air source heat pump, which connects to your existing radiators and provides centralised heating. Multi-split air conditioning gives you independent room-by-room control, which many customers prefer — you only heat the rooms you're using.
Air conditioning as supplementary heating
Many PGAD customers use their air conditioning as supplementary heating alongside their gas boiler — particularly for rooms that don't heat up quickly, home offices used outside normal hours, or bedrooms where precise temperature control is desired. On milder winter days, the air conditioning alone can be sufficient, reducing gas boiler usage and overall heating costs.
