How Long Does a Boiler Installation Take?
Most boiler installations are completed in a single day. The exact time depends on the type of installation, the location of the boiler, and whether any additional work (pipework, power flush, cylinder removal) is required. Here's what to expect.
Like-for-like replacement — typically 4–6 hours
A straightforward like-for-like swap — same boiler type, same location, existing pipework and flue in good condition — is usually completed in 4–6 hours. We disconnect the old boiler, install the new one, connect to the existing system, carry out a system flush, commission the boiler, and hand over the Gas Safe documentation. The property has no heating or hot water for the duration, but everything is back up before we leave.
Conversions and complex installations — up to 2 days
Converting from a system boiler to a combi (which involves removing a cylinder), moving the boiler to a new location, or upgrading to smart controls all add time. A full conversion with cylinder removal, new flue routing, and smart control installation typically takes a full day, sometimes extending to part of a second day in older properties with non-standard pipework. We'll confirm the expected duration during the free survey.
HMO and commercial installations
HMO properties often require careful scheduling — tenants need to be informed in advance, and the property will be without hot water and heating during installation. We aim to minimise this window. Our Vaillant HMO installation (36 kW ecoTEC Plus with Heatmiser controls in a 4-bed, 3-bathroom property) was completed in a single day.
What happens on the day
We arrive as agreed, protect the work area, shut off the gas and water supplies, remove the old boiler, install the new unit, connect all services, carry out the system power flush and inhibitor treatment, commission the boiler, test all controls, and walk you through the operation. Before we leave, you'll have a working boiler, a Gas Safe certificate, and a Benchmark commissioning record.
