Do I Need a Power Flush When Getting a New Boiler?
If you're replacing an older boiler, a power flush of your central heating system is strongly recommended and often required to protect the new boiler and maintain the manufacturer's warranty. Here's why.
What is a power flush?
A power flush is a process that circulates a high-flow, low-pressure water stream with specialist cleaning chemicals through your radiators and pipework. It removes accumulated sludge (magnetite — black iron oxide), limescale, rust, and debris that builds up in any central heating system over time. The process typically takes 4–6 hours depending on the size of the system and the level of contamination.
Why it matters for a new boiler
Sludge and debris from the old system doesn't disappear when you install a new boiler — it circulates into the new heat exchanger and causes premature damage. Blocked heat exchangers are one of the most common causes of new boiler failure in the first 2–3 years. More critically, most boiler manufacturers specify that the system must be flushed to their standard before installation in order for the warranty to be valid. Installing into a contaminated system can void a 10-year warranty on day one.
How do I know if my system needs a flush?
Signs of a contaminated system include: radiators that are hot at the top but cold at the bottom, radiators that take a long time to heat up, dirty water when you bleed radiators, or a boiler that makes banging or rumbling noises (kettling). If your system is more than 5 years old and has never been flushed, it almost certainly needs one.

After a power flush, we install an inline magnetic filter (MagnaCleanse or similar) to capture any residual particles before they reach the new boiler's heat exchanger. The filter should be checked and cleaned at each annual service. This, combined with the power flush and inhibitor, is the full clean-system protocol required by most boiler manufacturers.
